AIIMS Bhopal Hosts First-Ever Assistive Health Technology Hackathon to Transform Lives Through Innovation

Bhopal, December 12, 2025:
AIIMS Bhopal successfully hosted its first-ever “Assistive Technology Coffee Table + Med-Tech Hackathon 2025”, marking a major step toward transforming the landscape of Assistive Health Technology (AHT) in India. The event was organized under the newly established INTER-AIIMS Collaboration: Collaborating Center for Assistive Health Technology (AIIMS Bhopal Hosts First-Ever Assistive Health Technology Hackathon to Transform Lives Through Innovation) at AIIMS Bhopal, supported by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and NCAHT, AIIMS New Delhi.

Key Highlights

• The CCAHT at AIIMS Bhopal has been created to address the urgent global need for affordable Assistive Health Technologies, which more than 2.5 billion people worldwide require, including a large population in India.
• The hackathon aims to reduce dependence on imported assistive products and accelerate indigenous innovation in the AHT sector.
• The initiative emphasizes that AHT is essential to prevent disability from becoming a handicap by enabling independence, communication, learning, mobility, and full social participation.
• After a rigorous evaluation process, 12 promising projects were selected from diverse participants to develop prototype solutions tailored to real-world challenges faced by individuals with disabilities.
• AIIMS Bhopal’s pioneering efforts aim to strengthen India’s role in the global AHT ecosystem by developing accessible, affordable, and context-appropriate technologies for millions in need.

Addressing a Critical Global and National Need

AIIMS Bhopal continues to advance inclusive healthcare and medical innovation through its focus on Assistive Health Technology. A clear distinction between disability and handicap remains central to this mission.
A disability refers to any physical, sensory, cognitive, or psychosocial impairment. A handicap, however, results when environmental or social barriers prevent individuals with disabilities from fully participating in daily life. Many of these barriers disappear when appropriate assistive technologies, accessibility, and support systems are available.

Assistive Technology (AT) and Assistive Health Technology (AHT) encompass a wide range of tools including mobility aids, prosthetics, orthotics, communication devices, sensory aids, digital health solutions, and AI-driven systems. These technologies play a vital role in promoting independence, dignity, and equal opportunities.

Globally, the demand for assistive products is rising rapidly. More than 2.5 billion people require at least one assistive product today, and this number is expected to grow due to ageing populations, chronic illnesses, and higher disability prevalence. Shockingly, one billion people worldwide still lack access to essential assistive products because of high costs, limited production, low awareness, and inadequate integration into health systems.

India faces similar challenges. While the country has one of the largest populations of persons with disabilities and an expanding elderly population, access to affordable and advanced AHT remains limited. Many assistive products are imported, costly, and often unsuitable for Indian conditions—leaving millions underserved.

A Milestone Initiative: CCAHT and the Hackathon

To address these gaps, AIIMS Bhopal—in collaboration with ICMR and NCAHT AIIMS New Delhi—has established the Collaborating Center for Assistive Health Technology (CCAHT). The center aims to advance research, innovation, training, and development of India-centric AHT solutions.

As part of this initiative, the Assistive Technology Coffee Table + Med-Tech Hackathon 2025 brought together innovators, engineers, clinicians, rehabilitation experts, and young technologists. After multiple stages of evaluation, 12 high-potential teams were chosen to design and prototype solutions addressing mobility, communication, sensory impairment, cognitive support, and other essential AHT domains.

Strengthening India’s Leadership in AHT Innovation

This pioneering effort by AIIMS Bhopal promotes interdisciplinary collaboration, encourages young innovators, and strengthens India’s presence in the global AHT landscape. By fostering indigenous development and promoting scalable, affordable, and accessible solutions, AIIMS Bhopal aims to improve the quality of life for millions who stand to benefit from advancements in Assistive Health Technology.
