AIIMS Bhopal Research on the Combination of Moringa Oleifera and Chemotherapy in Breast Cancer Treatment
Bhopal. Under the leadership of Prof. (Dr.) Ajai Singh, Executive Director of AIIMS Bhopal, a new milestone has been achieved in the field of cancer research. On November 21, 2024, Ms. Neha Masarkar, a PhD student from the Department of Biochemistry, successfully defended her thesis titled "Combinatorial Effects of Moringa Oleifera Bio-active Compounds with Conventional Chemotherapeutic Agents Against Breast Cancer." Prof. Singh praised this research, stating that Ms. Neha Masarkar's work not only provides a new direction in cancer treatment but also reflects AIIMS Bhopal's commitment to scientific progress and innovation. He added that the combination of natural compounds with traditional treatments is a significant step towards making cancer treatment safer and more effective. This research has the potential to bring positive changes to the lives of cancer patients.
Ms. Masarkar’s research unveils new possibilities in breast cancer treatment. Breast cancer, one of the most prevalent and severe diseases globally, is effectively treated using conventional chemotherapy. However, its side effects, toxicity, and drug resistance complicate the treatment process. To address these challenges, Ms. Masarkar studied the combination of bioactive compounds from Moringa Oleifera (drumstick tree) with conventional chemotherapeutic agents. During the research, various in-vitro experiments revealed that Moringa's bioactive compounds enhanced the efficacy of chemotherapy. These compounds increased cancer cell death rates while reducing chemotherapy-associated side effects such as immune suppression and toxicity. The study highlights that the combination of Moringa compounds and chemotherapy agents can make cancer treatment safer and more effective.
This research was conducted under the guidance of Dr. Sukhes Mukherjee, Additional Professor in the Department of Biochemistry at AIIMS Bhopal. It presents new possibilities in the field of cancer therapy. If these findings are validated through clinical trials, the bioactive compounds of Moringa Oleifera could be used as an adjunct to chemotherapy. This would not only enhance the effectiveness of treatment against cancer cells but also reduce the side effects of drugs. This achievement has provided AIIMS Bhopal with a new identity in the field of cancer research. The event was graced by the presence of Prof. Rehan-ul-Haq, Dean (Research); Prof. Vaishali Walke, Dean (Examinations); Prof. Jagat R. Kanwar, Head of the Department of Biochemistry; and other faculty members and students of the institute.
