Run the Fan Along with the AC… Save Up to 30% Electricity

Bhopal: Slowly but surely, summer is making its presence felt. For a few days, a fan may be sufficient, but those who have air conditioners installed in their homes and offices will soon begin using them to cool their rooms. As soon as the temperature touches 38 degrees Celsius, the use of air conditioners becomes inevitable. During intense heat, many people set their AC to 18–20 degrees Celsius, thinking that the room will cool much faster. However, this is a common misconception.

Experts believe that whether you set the AC temperature to 18 or 26 degrees Celsius, the time taken to bring the room temperature down to 26 degrees remains the same. When you set a lower temperature, the compressor has to work harder to cool the room, resulting in higher electricity consumption and a larger bill. Even if you switch off the AC a few minutes after setting the thermostat at 18 degrees, the cool air escapes through various leaks, causing the temperature to rise quickly and rendering your effort ineffective.

Experts also suggest that if you set the thermostat at 26 degrees Celsius, use a timer for two hours, and run the ceiling fan simultaneously, it usually maintains a comfortable temperature for a good night’s sleep. Therefore, it is advisable to set the AC at 26 degrees and run the ceiling fan at one or two speed levels. This practice can significantly reduce your electricity bill.

Electricity consumption rises during summer, leading to higher power bills. However, by adopting certain measures, the bill can be reduced. The Madhya Kshetra Vidyut Vitaran Company has claimed, based on research, that setting the AC temperature at 26 degrees Celsius can reduce electricity bills by up to 30 percent. According to the study, with every one-degree increase in temperature setting, the energy consumption of a split AC decreases by approximately 6 percent.

According to the power distribution company, continuous use of air conditioners during summer is a major cause of concern due to high electricity bills. However, by using the AC wisely, expenses can be reduced considerably. The most important suggestion issued by the electricity distribution company is to operate the AC at a higher but comfortable temperature. Research conducted by various agencies has proven that setting the AC temperature at 26 degrees Celsius can reduce electricity bills by up to 30 percent.
