Dr. B.L. Soni of AIIMS Bhopal Awarded First Prize for
Innovation in Organ Donation at NAMSCON 2024
Prof. (Dr.) Ajai Singh, Executive Director of AIIMS Bhopal, consistently fosters a culture of academic excellence and knowledge-sharing among faculty and students. Inspired by Prof. Singh, faculty members have been achieving extraordinary milestones in various research endeavors. Recently, Dr. B.L. Soni, Assistant Professor in the Department of Trauma and Emergency Medicine at AIIMS Bhopal, was honored with the First Prize in the Oral Presentation category at the 64th Annual Conference of the National Academy of Medical Sciences (NAMSCON 2024). This conference was held from November 21-24, 2024, at AIIMS Jodhpur and witnessed the participation of distinguished physicians and researchers from across the country. Commending Dr. Soni’s achievement, Prof. Singh remarked, “Dr. Soni’s innovation has the potential to revolutionize organ donation by maintaining the dignity of donors while encouraging broader acceptance and saving lives. AIIMS Bhopal is committed to developing solutions that bridge the gap between science and humanity.”
Dr. Soni presented on the topic, “Innovative Use of 3D Printed Bone Analogues for Post-Bone Retrieval Reconstruction as Natural Appurtenance in Deceased Donors,” where he showcased a unique technology addressing complex challenges in organ donation. Emphasizing the importance of organ donation, Dr. Soni highlighted that up to 20 different organs and tissues can be harvested from a deceased donor, potentially saving numerous lives. However, he noted that cultural beliefs and concerns over body disfigurement often deter families from consenting to organ donation. Addressing this issue, he proposed the use of 3D-printed bone analogues, which preserve the donor's natural body structure while alleviating family concerns, thereby ensuring respect for the donor and encouraging organ donation.
