Brother saves brother's life by donating kidney
Successful kidney transplant done at AIIMS Bhopal
Bhopal. Due to diabetes and high blood pressure, kidney disease is also increasing dangerously in India. Every year in India, about three lakh patients reach the last stage of kidney disease, that is, these kidney patients need dialysis or kidney transplant. Even today, a large number of kidney patients are waiting for kidney donation so that someone donates a kidney so that their life can be saved. But not every kidney patient is as lucky as 25-year-old Manohar (name changed) of Bhopal. Manohar, admitted for treatment at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Bhopal, has been given his elder brother's kidney transplant. Manohar's condition is continuously improving, while the kidney donor has started walking from the second day itself. The kidney patient has been treated under the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana, due to which the patient is getting high quality medical facility free of cost.
A resident of Bhopal, suffering from kidney disease for about three years, was undergoing regular dialysis for one and a half years. Kidney transplant was the only way for him to survive. In this difficult time, his 31-year-old elder brother showed courage and decided to donate one of his kidneys. At AIIMS Bhopal, the kidney of the elder brother, the donor, was removed through laparoscopic technique, which is a minimally invasive procedure. In this, only a small incision is made in the abdomen, due to which the pain after the operation is less, recovery is faster and the scar is also very small. With this method, the donor brother started walking from the second day of kidney removal. The successful kidney transplant was done by an efficient team of specialists from various departments of AIIMS Bhopal. The team included Dr. Mahendra Atlani from the Department of Nephrology, Dr. Devashish Kaushal, Dr. Kumar Madhavan, Dr. Ketan Mehra and Dr. Nikita Srivastava from the Department of Urology. At the same time, Dr. Vaishali Vendeskar, Dr. Sunaina Tejpal Karna and Dr. Shikha Jain played an important role in the Department of Anesthesia. The expertise and dedication of all these doctors made this transplant successful. AIIMS Bhopal is continuously pursuing its mission of providing high quality healthcare services by expanding its organ transplant program. Through such initiatives, the institute remains a symbol of hope and health for patients suffering from end-stage kidney disease.
Prof. (Dr.) Ajay Singh, Executive Director, AIIMS Bhopal expressed happiness over this achievement and congratulated the medical team and underlined the importance of this important achievement. He said, "This achievement is a testimony to the dedication and collective efforts of our multidisciplinary team. This is the eighth case of successful kidney transplant at AIIMS Bhopal. It also reflects the spirit of human compassion, where a brother selflessly gave a new life to his brother. At AIIMS Bhopal, we are committed to providing the best medical care to our patients, and this transplant done under the Ayushman Bharat scheme ensures that financial constraints never come in the way of life-saving treatment. He said that our organ transplant program will continue to grow in this way so that more and more patients can get health benefits.
