AIIMS Bhopal Performs Rare Surgery:
Jaw Reconstructed with Leg Bone,
13 Teeth Implanted
Bhopal. The Dental Department of AIIMS Bhopal has successfully performed a rare and complex surgery that has set a new milestone in medical care. In this case, a patient’s lower jaw, which had to be removed due to a tumor, was reconstructed using the bone from her leg, and 13 new teeth were implanted. This achievement not only restored the patient’s smile but also brought hope and happiness back into her life. A 24-year-old girl came to AIIMS Bhopal with complaints of swelling in the mouth and recurring pus discharge. Upon diagnosis, it was found that she was suffering from a condition known as Benign Odontogenic Tumor. Considering the seriousness of the case, Dr. Anshul Rai and his team—Dr. Babulal, Dr. Zenish, Dr. Sudeep, Dr. Farhan, Dr. Pradha, and Dr. Deepa—planned a multi-phase surgical procedure.

First Phase: In the first phase, the lower jaw bone was removed along with the tumor, which measured more than 12 centimeters. During the procedure, 13 damaged teeth also had to be extracted as the bone was severely affected.
Second Phase: After the removal of the jaw and teeth, the patient faced severe difficulty in eating, her facial appearance was distorted, and she slipped into depression. To restore her facial aesthetics and oral function, Dr. Anshul Rai and his team reconstructed the jaw using the patient’s leg bone (iliac crest) and placed 9 dental implants. The team also provided continuous counseling sessions to support the patient mentally and emotionally.
Third Phase: It took about six months for the leg bone to fully integrate with the lower jaw. In the third and final phase, 13 new teeth were implanted. After the completion of all three phases, the patient regained her natural facial appearance, was able to eat normally again, and her quality of life improved significantly.
Dr. Anshul Rai, who has over 20 years of experience in dental implants and surgeries, informed that this was the first case in Central India where a 12 cm jaw was reconstructed using a leg bone along with 13 dental implants. The case has been submitted for publication in the International Implants Journal. He emphasized that the biggest achievement was bringing happiness back to a young girl who had been suffering from depression for a long time.
