AIIMS Bhopal Team Wins InSc Research Excellence Award

Bhopal. All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Bhopal continues to shine under the leadership of Professor (Dr.) Ajai Singh, Executive Director, with yet another prestigious recognition for its faculty. Recently, the team led by Dr. Varun Malhotra has been awarded the prestigious Institute of Scholars (InSc) Research Excellence Award 2024 for their outstanding research contributions. The award recognizes their groundbreaking work in the field of physiology, with their research published in the Mymensingh Medical Journal (July 2024).

Prof. Singh congratulated the team on this remarkable achievement and emphasized the importance of innovative research in advancing medical science. "The InSc Research Excellence Award 2024 is a testament to the dedication and hard work of our researchers at AIIMS Bhopal. The recognition of Dr. Malhotra and his team’s study highlights the significance of exploring traditional practices like Kapalbhati Pranayama alongside modern exercise techniques for a deeper understanding of their physiological effects.

The study, titled "Comparative Analysis of the Effects of Exercise and Kapalbhati Pranayama on Heart Rate Variability and Electroencephalogram Activity," explores the impact of physical exercise and Kapalbhati on heart rate variability (HRV) and brain activity. Conducted at AIIMS Bhopal, the study highlights that both interventions increase brain activity, with Kapalbhati showing a more potent effect. Additionally, the research revealed that while exercise significantly reduces HRV parameters, indicating sympathetic nervous system dominance, Kapalbhati has a milder effect on HRV.

Dr. Malhotra credited the positive research environment at AIIMS Bhopal under the leadership of Prof. Ajai Singh for fostering continuous innovation and research excellence. The award-winning research was a collaborative effort by Dr. Varun Malhotra, Dr. Rakesh Jiwane, and Dr. Frederico Cidral-Filho, whose combined expertise contributed significantly to the study's success.
