India's Longest Water Tunnel Takes Shape in Madhya Pradesh

Katni: The nearly 12-kilometre-long water tunnel under construction in the Sleemanabad region of Madhya Pradesh's Katni district has entered its final phase. According to various media reports, it is being described as the longest water tunnel in India. The tunnel is a key component of the ambitious Narmada Valley Development Project and is expected to carry Narmada River water for the first time to the Vindhya region, providing a new lifeline for irrigation and drinking water in the districts of Katni, Satna, Maihar, Rewa, and Panna.

During an inspection of the project, Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav said that although the Vindhya region is rich in natural resources, many areas have long faced water scarcity. He described the Sleemanabad Water Tunnel as a historic step toward addressing this challenge. The project has an approved cost of approximately ₹1,600 crore, of which the Central Government has contributed around ₹275 crore. He also expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the Centre's support.

According to experts, the project represents a unique engineering achievement by conveying Narmada water through an underground tunnel into the Son River system. For the first time, water from the Narmada basin will reach the Ganga basin, significantly improving irrigation and drinking water availability across the Vindhya and Baghelkhand regions. Parts of the project also include provisions for hydroelectric power generation.

Once completed, the project will create irrigation potential for nearly 250,000 hectares of agricultural land. Preparations are underway to provide irrigation water for about 100,000 hectares during the upcoming Rabi season. Official figures indicate that under the Son Kachhar Project, a discharge of 152 cusecs will provide irrigation to 104,970 hectares in Satna district, 54,227 hectares in Maihar, 21,823 hectares in Katni, 3,532 hectares in Rewa, and 448 hectares in Panna. Construction of the associated canal network is also progressing rapidly.

Engineers describe the tunnel as one of India's most technically challenging water infrastructure projects. At several locations, it extends to a depth of nearly 120 feet below the ground surface. The structure has been designed to withstand severe earthquakes and remain structurally safe for approximately 100 years. The tunnel passes beneath national highways, railway lines, underground utilities, and inhabited areas without causing structural or environmental damage. Rehabilitation, compensation, and resettlement of affected families have also been carried out in accordance with established procedures.

Construction of the tunnel was far from easy. Work on the project began several years ago, but progress during the initial phase was relatively slow. By 2015, only 1,406 metres of excavation had been completed. The pace accelerated in 2016 with the deployment of a modern Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) imported from Germany at the upstream end. Despite encountering hard rock formations, complex geological conditions, and stringent safety requirements, engineers, technicians, and thousands of workers continued operations in three eight-hour shifts, bringing the project close to completion.

Experts believe that the Sleemanabad Water Tunnel is much more than an irrigation project. It has the potential to transform the agricultural economy of the Vindhya, Baghelkhand, and Bundelkhand regions of Madhya Pradesh. Expanded irrigation facilities are expected to promote crop diversification, increase agricultural productivity, improve access to drinking water, generate rural employment, reduce migration, and encourage the growth of agro-based industries.

Engineering professionals also believe that, because of its scale, geological complexity, and innovative engineering solutions, the Sleemanabad Water Tunnel is likely to become an important engineering case study for future infrastructure projects in India.
