India's population will be more than 152 crores in 2036

There is a slight increase in the number of women

New Delhi. India's population is expected to be 152.2 crores by 2036, in which the percentage of women is estimated to be 48.8 percent with a slight increase compared to 48.5 percent in 2011. There is also a positive aspect here that by 2036, the ratio of women in India can reach 952 as compared to 943 in the 2011 census. Still, the matter of concern is that despite the continuous increase in the literacy rate, there may be a difference of 48 in the ratio of men and women. Currently, India is called a country of youth, but by the year 2036, a greater increase can be seen in the population of people above 60 years of age. This possibility has been expressed by the Ministry of Statistics and Program Implementation of the Government of India. The ministry has published the 25th issue of the booklet titled “Women and Men in India 2023” which contains the above information.

“Women and Men in India 2023” states that the age specific fertility rate in the age groups of 20 to 24 and 25 to 29 has declined from 135.4 and 166 to 113.6 and 139.6 respectively from 2016 to 2020. It has increased from 32.7 to 35.6 in the 35-39 age group for the above period, which shows that after settling down in life, women are considering expanding the family.

According to the report, a target has been set to bring down the maternal mortality rate to 70 by 2030. Due to the continuous efforts of the government, India has succeeded in reducing the maternal mortality rate to 97 per lakh in 2018-20 in time. Similarly, the infant mortality rate has also been declining over the years to 28 per 1,000 live births in 2020. Data on mortality rate of children under 5 years of age shows that it has declined from 43 in 2015 to 32 in 2020.

By the 15th national election in 1999, less than 60 per cent of female voters had participated and male voter turnout was 8 per cent higher. However, female participation increased to 65.6 per cent in the 2014 elections and further to 67.2 per cent in the 2019 elections. For the first time, the voting percentage for women was slightly higher, reflecting the impact of rising literacy and political awareness among women.

The booklet “Women and Men in India 2023” provides a holistic view of the status of women and men in India and provides factual information on key topics such as population, education, health, participation in the economy, participation in decision-making, etc. This report is an important resource for understanding demographic changes and their implications for both women and men in India. It serves as an important tool for advocacy and action to promote gender equality and ensure that development efforts are inclusive and sustainable.
