AIIMS Bhopal Achieves Historic Milestone with
Madhya Pradesh's First Successful Heart Transplant
Bhopal. AIIMS Bhopal successfully performed the first heart transplant in the state of Madhya Pradesh. This significant achievement has proven to be a milestone in the field of healthcare services. The heart was obtained from 61-year-old brain-dead patient, admitted to the NSCB Medical College in Jabalpur. This organ donation was made possible due to the generous consent given by his family with the noble intention of giving the gift of life to others.
A dedicated team of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgeons (CTVS) from AIIMS Bhopal undertook a challenging task by traveling overnight. The team departed from Bhopal at midnight and, upon reaching Jabalpur, began the organ harvest process for the heart transplant. The procedure was successfully completed by 10:30 AM. The heart was airlifted from Jabalpur at 10:50 AM with the surgical team on board. Due to excellent coordination among officials and meticulous planning, the aircraft landed at Raja Bhoj Airport, Bhopal, at noon. Through a carefully prepared "green corridor" by law enforcement and hospital administration, the organ was swiftly transported to AIIMS Bhopal.
Prof. (Dr.) Ajai Singh, Executive Director, and Prof. (Dr.) Shashank Purwar, Medical Superintendent, were present on-site to receive the heart and praised the efforts of the entire CTVS team. The heart transplant procedure was carried out by a skilled surgical team, including Dr. Yogesh Niwariya, Dr. M. Kishan, Dr. Surendra Yadav, Dr. Rahul Sharma, Dr. Vikram Watti, and Dr. Aditya Sirohi. Cardiology specialist Dr. Bhushan Shah played an important role in this process. In this procedure, the cardiac anesthetists’ team, under the guidance of Dr. Vaishali Waindeskar and led by Dr. Nagbhushan, provided crucial support. Transplant coordination was efficiently managed by Shri Dinesh Meena. The nursing staff, including Shailesh, Mamraj, Lalit, Pallavi, Dinesh Panchal, and Poonam, played a significant role in the procedure. Additionally, perfusionists Vedant and Sushma contributed their expertise to ensure the success of the transplant. The heart has been successfully transplanted into a 53-year old patient from Itarsi.
Prof. Singh emphasized the importance of this heart transplant, stating, "This success is the result of the hard work of AIIMS Bhopal’s dedicated doctors and hospital administration. We feel proud to have successfully carried out this critical medical procedure for the first time in Madhya Pradesh. This transplant is not only a milestone in the state's medical history, but it also symbolizes the greatness and generosity of the family who donated the organ to give life to others."
