"AIIMS Bhopal Organizes Awareness Programme on Sickle Cell Anemia"

In a significant step towards addressing the challenges posed by sickle cell anemia, AIIMS Bhopal organized an awareness programme in the Pediatric OPD area on Wednesday, 28th August 2024. The event, held under the Government of India’s mission "Sickle-Free India," aimed to educate patients, caregivers, and healthcare providers about the early detection and effective management of this genetic disorder.

Prof. (Dr.) Ajai Singh, Executive Director of AIIMS Bhopal, emphasized the institution’s ongoing efforts to raise awareness about sickle cell anemia. He stated, "We are continuously making efforts to raise awareness about sickle cell anemia. This genetic disorder affects many individuals and their families, and it is our responsibility to make education and early identification a key part of our healthcare services. By conducting awareness sessions and sensitization programmes, we aim to provide information to patients, caregivers, and healthcare providers that will enable them to identify symptoms early, access effective treatment options, and manage the disease more efficiently. Through widespread community literacy, enhanced genetic screening, and a strong support system, we can make a significant impact in preventing and managing sickle cell anemia to fulfill the Government of India’s vision of a ‘Sickle-Free India’. Together, we can progress towards a future where sickle cell anemia is not a barrier to living a healthy and fulfilling life."

The programme covered essential topics, including the early recognition of symptoms, available therapeutic options, advances in genetic screening techniques, and the role of community awareness in preventing disease transmission. Experts from the departments of Pediatrics and Hematology actively participated in the event, addressing common queries and concerns raised by the public.

This initiative is a testament to AIIMS Bhopal's commitment to enhancing patient care and education for those affected by sickle cell anemia. Through such awareness programmes, AIIMS Bhopal continues to contribute significantly to the national mission of making India "Sickle-Free," ensuring that individuals and families impacted by this condition receive the knowledge and support they need for better management and improved quality of life.
